Where Semantic Technologies are Making a Difference

The Expert System team participated in a panel at the recent SemTechBiz conference in London and came back with some positive insights about where semantic technologies are making a difference. First off, semantic technologies are “Improving processing of anaphora, which are used commonly in social media communications, such as posts on blogs, Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. The interpretation of anaphora is important for a correct analysis of sentiment among several posts, or even in the same post where information is not always explicitly expressed. Correct processing of anaphora allows you to almost double the collection of opinions and sentiment expressed online (i.e., ‘I love the new iPhone’ and, a few posts later ‘But I don’t love it any more’ where the person is still talking about the iPhone).” continued…

Report from SemTechBiz UK

The first Semantic Technology and Business Conference in the United Kingdom (#semtechbiz) wrapped up in London this week, and there are some themes that emerged from the presentations and networking conversations.

We heard a lot about the benefits of using Semantic Technology solutions. There were strong case studies and experiences shared, and we will be diving deeper into some of these in coming weeks here at SemanticWeb.com. Sometimes these solutions were in place of — and sometimes in conjunction with — RDBMS databases, spreadsheets, XML files, and other data management systems. While there was a nice diversity of companies, industries, and products represented, there seemed to be consensus around some of the following benefits of using Semantic Tech for business applications:

The Semantic Web Game’s Afoot

There’s more than one issue in getting organizational buy-in for semantic web technologies. In addition to convincing the business of the technical merits, it’s also important to address the social challenges. Speaking about the topic this week at the Semantic Tech and Business Conference in London is Dr. Elena Simperl, Assistant Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology at the Institute AIFG.

“When IT people think of semantic technologies, when developers or researchers think about them, we think about how to do things in an automated way,” says Simperl. “But there are certain types of tasks where you can achieve only that much using automatic techniques.” That includes those having to do with modeling and structuring knowledge in a certain way, for instance, or describing the aboutness or content of pictures.

So, how about appealing to something that they probably like a lot more than simply being asked to, say, annotate some documents? How about coaxing them to do so by appealing to their sense of play and even their ego?

WEBCAST: SPARQL Queries, SPARQL Technology with Bob DuCharme

If you missed last week’s excellent introduction to SPARQL by Bob DuCharme of TopQuadrant and the recently released Learning SPARQL, the recorded webcast is now available. In this presentation, Bob shows how to create and run SPARQL queries. He also talks about the role that the query language can play in application development. Lastly, he looks at the range of uses people are finding for SPARQL above and beyond querying of RDF data, such as querying relational data, defining rules to enhance data quality, and more…

Franz’s NoSQL Database Successfully Loads 1 Trillion RDF Triples

Franz’s NoSQL database, AllegroGraph has become the first NoSQL database to load over one trillion RDF Triples, a feat that is being called “a major step forward in scalability for the Semantic Web.” According to the article, “A trillion RDF Statements eclipses the current state of the art for the Semantic Web data management but is a primary interest for companies like Amdocs that use triples to represent real-time knowledge about telecom customers. Per-customer, Amdocs uses about 4,000 triples, so a large telecom like China Mobile would easily need 2 trillion triples to have detailed knowledge about each single customer.” continued…

DARPA Calls for New Communication Technologies

A new article reports, “The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the DoD progenitors of revolutionary tech like passive radar and the Internet, is calling for research applications of social media to strategic communication. According to an agency announcement (PDF), DARPA is looking to shell out $42 million in funding for ‘innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems.’ The general goal of the Social Media in Strategic Communication (SMISC) program is to develop a new science of social networks built on an emerging technology base.” This push toward the innovative social technology is hardly new territory for DARPA – the agency has been at the forefront of the semantic web for years with initiatives like DAML, the US flagship R&D program in semantic web. continued…

School Starts in September – Plan to Get Educated!

I hate to even mention how quickly Summer is passing, but as we head into August, it’s time to start making plans for the busy Fall event season. September is particularly full of Semantic Tech events.

September 14, in New York City, the Semantic Web Media Summit will take place. A half-day meeting focused on uses of Semantic Web in media, advertising, and publishing, the event is produced by SemanticWeb.com, Lotico.com and our parent company, MediaBistro. With a keynote by Mike Dunn, CTO of Hearst Interactive, and contributions from a stellar group of presenters, the program promises to be a must-attend event for anyone in the New York area interested in how Semantic Technology is changing the media world. OpenAmplify is sponsoring the conference.

September 21-23, DC-2011, the eleventh International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications, will take place at the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague.

Also on Sept. 21, the folks at Schema.org are planning a workshop in Silicon Valley. There are still few details available about this event.

September 26-27, The London Semantic Technology and Business Conference (#SemTechBiz) takes place at the Hotel Russell. This two-day executive conference is designed for business and technology executives who need to learn what semantic technologies are and how to take advantage of semantics in their enterprise and web-based systems. Attendees will further their technical understanding in introductory sessions and learn from the Keynote speakers John O’Donovan (Press Association), Martin Hepp (Hepp Research), Steve Harris (Garlik), and Dennis E. Wisnosky, U.S. Department of Defense.

Benefits of UK’s Broadening of Open Data Resources

A new article comments on the recent announcement by UK Prime Minister David Cameron regarding “the broadening of the publicly available government data with the publishing of key data on the National Health Service, schools, criminal courts and transport. The background to the announcement was a celebration of the preceding year of activity in the areas of transparency and open data, with many core government data sets being published. Too many to list here, but the 7,200+ listed on data.gov.uk gives you an insight. The political guide to this is undeniable, as Mr. Cameron makes clear in his YouTube speech for the announcement (below) ‘Information is power because it allows people to hold the powerful to account.’” continued…

#SemTechBiz Keynote: Department of Defense Mandates use of Semantic Technology (Video)

“The Secretary of Defense is responsible for a half-trillion dollar enterprise that is roughly an order of magnitude larger than any commercial corporation that has ever existed. DoD estimates that business support activities—the Defense Agencies and the business support operations within the Military Departments—comprise 53% of the DoD enterprise.”

This was one of the realities put forward by Dennis Wisnosky, CTO and Chief Architect, Business Mission Area, U.S. Department of Defense, during his Keynote at the 2011 Semantic Technology Conference San Francisco. Mr. Wisnosky was speaking about how the US DoD leverages Semantic Technology across systems to meet the goal of having an “executable, integrated, consumable, solution architecture.” In particular, he spoke about using the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard by OMG for their Business Process Modeling efforts, in conjunction with systems built on RDF, OWL, and SPARQL.

Semantics at the British Museum

PoolParty, a sponsor of SemTech London 2011, recently interviewed Dominic Oldman, the deputy head of the information systems department at the British Museum: “PoolParty Team had the chance to talk with Dominic about the importance of semantic technologies and thesauri (SKOS) in the cultural heritage sector and the plans of the British Museum to integrate these technologies into their information systems.”

When asked about the purpose of the British Museum’s thesaurus project, Oldman responded, “The British Museum already uses thesauri as part of its collection record system. They include: object type (e.g. pin, cup), material (e.g. paper, stone), technique of manufacture (e.g. carved, incised)… continued…

SemTech SF, UK, and DC – Is Location the Only Difference?

Since 2005, the Semantic Technology Conference has been going strong and growing. As we have reported here, the 2011 series is expanding into new markets, with conferences scheduled in London and Washington DC later this year. This is an exciting development, but has also raised questions from the community about the similarities and differences between the three events. Following are brief descriptions from the SemTech Conference series Co-Chair, Tony Shaw. For information about registration and sponsorship opportunities for each event, see the links after each listing below. Discounts are available for multi-event sponsorships.

SemTech SF is “Everything Semantic.” It’s by far the largest of the 3 events, in terms of both attendance (approx 1200) and the size of the conference (9 tracks). SemTech SF has business and technical content, and covers all the major topics from enterprise IT to web-scale infrastructure, and application areas including search, data integration, sentiment analysis, information infrastructure, content management, knowledge management, text analysis, etc. We also have a research component to the San Francisco program.
