HTML5 Definition Complete, W3C Moves to Interoperability Testing and Performance

First Draft of HTML 5.1 Offers Glimpse at Next Round of Standardization

(Press Release) 17 December 2012 — The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published today the complete definition of the HTML5 and Canvas 2D specifications. Though not yet W3C standards, these specifications are now feature complete, meaning businesses and developers have a stable target for implementation and planning. HTML5 is the cornerstone of the Open Web Platform, a full programming environment for cross-platform applications with access to device capabilities; video and animations; graphics; style, typography, and other tools for digital publishing; extensive network capabilities; and more.

“The broader the reach of Web technology, the more our stakeholders demand a stable standard,” said W3C CEO Jeff Jaffe. “As of today, businesses know what they can rely on for HTML5 in the coming years, and what their customers will demand. Likewise, developers will know what skills to cultivate to reach smart phones, cars, televisions, ebooks, digital signs, and devices not yet known.”

#SemTechBiz Start-Up Contest – Deadline Extension and Judges Announced

SemanticWeb.com and parent company WebMediaBrands recently announced a contest to earn the title of “Top Semantic Technology Start-Up.” Today, we have two exciting announcements to make about the contest.

Deadline Extension

We have had several requests to extend the deadline, and are announcing today that we will now accept applications for the contest until April 30, 2012. We also learned of some applicants who encountered technical problems when trying to submit in the early days of the contest. We have fixed the code that caused these problems, and encourage all who experienced difficulties to try again.

Judges

We are also pleased to announce the panel of judges that will be at SemTechBiz evaluating the companies. It’s a great group, and we’re looking forward to a lively afternoon!

Google Announces Updates to Rich Snippets

Google has announced two updates to rich snippets, the enhanced format that they announced in 2009 for displaying content in search results that use semantic markup.

The first update addresses an issue raised on answers.semanticweb.com in July of 2011. Prior to this update, only some places in the world saw rich snippets in their local results. Now product rich snippets is getting global support, meaning that users worldwide will be able to preview product information in the rich snippet. Here is an example from www.google.fr:

Announcement of Linked Data Basic Profile 1.0 Submission

In December 2011, the World Wide Web Consortium held “The Linked Enterprise Data Patterns workshop,” and that workshop ended with unanimous agreement that “the W3C should create a Working Group to produce a W3C Recommendation which defines a Linked Data Platform.”

In response to that call, SemanticWeb.com has joined experts from fellow W3C member Organizations IBM, DERI, EMC, Oracle, Red Hat, and Tasktop in submitting the “Linked Data Basic Profile 1.0” specification as a W3C Member Submission. This specification defines a set of best practices and a simple approach for a read-write Linked Data architecture, based on HTTP access to web resources that describe their state using RDF. The specification builds on the four principles Tim Berners-Lee used to define “Linked Data” and provides some new rules as well as clarifications and extensions to achieve greater interoperability between Linked Data implementations.

TextDigger Announces $4.3 Million A-1 Funding

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ — TextDigger, Inc., a semantic profiling, text mining, and search tools company, announced the closing of a US $4.3 million round of venture capital funding. The series A-1 round was led by True Ventures (San Francisco, CA) with a follow on investment from Intel Capital (Santa Clara, CA). Also participating were CBS Interactive (formerly CNET Networks) and several leading angel investors.

TextDigger will use the funding to develop and market its semantic profiling, hosted search and automated tagging solutions in the online publishing and e-commerce sectors, expanding its sales and marketing presence within the U.S.

TextDigger’s advanced semantic services increase the findability of web pages, both internally within a site and externally on major search engines. The advanced semantic technology can disambiguate the various meanings of words, and can match queries to web pages where different words are used to describe the same idea. The results are better search results, increased ad inventory, and longer user sessions.

Commenting on the investment round, Tim Musgrove, CEO of TextDigger, stated, "The strong positive reactions to our beta trials last year led to a renewed investor interest in our company. We are proud to have attracted three industry leaders who, between them, possess vast talent across technology marketing, digital media production, and the management of start-ups."

Phil Black of True Ventures commented, "The time has come when every company owning large amounts of Web-based content wants a smarter tool to optimize that content, so that every bit of value in it is delivered to their customers. TextDigger is uniquely qualified to provide such services, and we believe that any site which has its own search can benefit right now from working with TextDigger."

Eghosa Omoigui of Intel Capital commented, "Content publishers are fast realizing that their current methods of connecting web users to timely and relevant information, such as collaborative filtering and community recommendations, may not solve the whole problem. TextDigger has developed software tools to help give consumers a better grasp on web content, the volume of which is dramatically increasing. The company’s unique approach has enormous potential in this growing space."

About TextDigger, Inc.

TextDigger is a San Jose, CA-based startup developing advanced semantic solutions for the Web, including hosted semantic search, automated content tagging and topic generation, and optimized keyword generation. These products make Web pages more findable, both to outside search engines such as Google and to other pages within the same site via cross-linking and related search. The result is increased revenue from higher inbound traffic and longer sessions. According to Tony Shaw, Editor of Semantic Universe Network, "The semantic community needs a vehicle to communicate the comprehensive business applications and benefits of semantic technology, as well as a better way to connect developers, customers, entrepreneurs and investors. Semantic Universe Network will be that vehicle."

Says Brian Crook, President of Cerebra, "Today’s launch is an important milestone towards the semanticuniverse.com vision. We now have the technical framework to facilitate the growth and interaction of the community and an online sandbox for all of us to showcase, discuss and advance the enabling benefits of semantic technology."
