Predicting Education Success with Machine Learning

Don Clark of the Wall Street Journal reports, “Computer-based educational systems have long helped impart information to students and assess their understanding of it. The next step, one company in the field says, is using their behavior to make predictions. That’s the aim of technology being announced Tuesday by Desire2Learn, a Canadian company that specializes in cloud-based based learning systems it markets to colleges, schools and companies. Desire2Learn, launched in 1999, competes with companies like Blackboard and Instructure. It claims that 10 million learners at a range of institutions have made use of its technology, including some at big U.S. university systems.” continued…

Silk Launches New CSV Importer & Bookmarklet Tools

Silk, a company we have highlighted in the past, recently unveiled two new tools, the new CSV importer and the Silk bookmarklet. According to the company, “When you start a Silk site you can begin from scratch, but you might already have some data lying around. If this is the case, Silk makes your life a bit easier by offering the CSV Importer. This tool can automatically create a page for every row in a spreadsheet. You can use this for your own spreadsheets or for publicly available datasets. The only caveat is that your spreadsheet must be exported as a CSV file. CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values. It is the most common and easy way to format rows of data. Every well known spreadsheet program can export to this file format.” continued…

Invoke Showcases the Power of Next-Generation Business Intelligence

Paris, France, May 02, 2013 –(PR.com)– In the form of a flexible, generic and taxonomy-driven solution that leverages the XBRL extension of the Oracle 11g XML database, XBRL Analyzer is the first application of its kind to release XBRL data from the technical arena and allow business end-users to regain control over their analysis needs. With XBRL Analyzer, the underlying technical sophistication of the XBRL standard is masked, and non-technical users can freely exploit and extract business-relevant information from mass volumes of highly-dimensional XBRL data that, without analysis, would be effectively devoid of value. continued…

Gatfol Language Semantics Announces First Integrated Prototype Installation

Centurion, South Africa (PRWEB) April 26, 2013 — Gatfol serves base technology to provide digital devices with the ability to process human natural language efficiently.

The goal of truly semantic search has not yet fully been realized. The main problem is the enormity of ambiguous word permutations of semantic equivalence in even the simplest of phrases, which up to now has processing-wise required huge structured lexicons and ontologies as guides. continued…

GRUFF – Graph Search Browser extends Visual Query Building Capabilities

Gruff v5 and AllegroGraph Power Graph Search for Banking, Pharma Discovery, Health Care and Security Applications

OAKLAND, Calif. — April 23, 2013 – Franz Inc., the leading supplier of Graph Database technology for the Semantic Web, today announced Gruff v5.0, the industry’s leading RDF browser to view graph data, explore connections within data, and visually build queries without writing code.

The free-form nature of Graph style data offers a lot of flexibility for connecting data, but that freedom can also make it more challenging to find interesting patterns or simply navigate through your data. It has become typical for RDF data sets to contain thousands of classes and relationship types, making it hard to even formulate the analytics and queries you want to perform.

Gruff, a visual analytics and discovery tool, was developed by Franz to specifically address these Graph data challenges in large data sets. Gruff lets you intelligently explore graphs in multiple views:

Graphical View – See the shape and density of your graph data

Tabular view – Understand objects as a whole

Outline view – Explore the often hierarchical nature of graphs

Query view – Write Prolog or SPARQL queries

Graphical Query Builder – Create queries visually via drag and drop

Virtual Assistant App Sherpa Raises $1.6M

Anthony Ha of Tech Crunch reports, “Sherpa, a personal assistant app that launched initially in the Spanish-speaking world, just announced that it has raised $1.7 million in funding from undisclosed angel investors. Sherpa users can speak or type their requests, and the app answers them by collecting information from around the web. The company has also partnered with PayPal and other services, so that users accomplish tasks like making travel reservations and transferring money.”

Ha continues, “The technology was developed by founder and CEO Xabier Uribe-Etxebarria. He actually stopped by the TechCrunch office last fall to show off the app and to compare the results to what you would find in Siri and in Wolfram Alpha. There were, in fact, a number of cases where he’d asked some factual questions and get more complete and relevant answers from Sherpa than the competition. (To be clear, that was a pretty limited test. continued…

Data is Shaping the Future of Product Development

Max Engel of HypeBot recently identified the smart use of data as one of three major trends currently shaping the future of product development. He writes, “The role that data plays goes beyond analytics. Open platforms and API’s allow for the creation of product mash-ups that have broken down barriers to content availability. One cannot underestimate the brilliance of platform-focused companies like SoundCloud and Spotify that allow innovation to occur rapidly and unfettered. Similarly, structured data is going to be increasingly impactful. Facebook’s Open Graph, for example, projects the foundation for the oft-mentioned semantic web.” continued…
