Fujitsu, DERI Set to Unveil Details of Linked Data Interface

Carmel Doyle of Silicon Republic recently covered some exciting developments that have arisen from the recent collaboration between Fujitsu Labs and DERI: “This week, Fujitsu is presenting the first results from its research collaboration with DERI at the XBRL26 conference taking place in Dublin. Speaking this afternoon, Fujitsu Ireland’s head of research Anthony McCauley said the team has been pioneering an interface that sits on linked data. ’We’ve been looking at that not just from a research perspective but also in terms of the real commercial opportunities that linked data can provide,’ he said.”

Doyle continues, “The big challenge at the moment for data miners is that data sets are dispersed in different locations. continued…

Publishers Amp Up R&D Strategies

Tara McMeekin of News and Tech recently wrote, “As budgets continue to shrink, most newspaper and magazine publishers have been forced to slash their R&D spending. But at a time when the right game-changing technology could be more crucial than ever for a battered industry, some news organizations are fighting back. Dow Jones, for instance, last year bankrolled a handpicked R&D team, which reports directly to CEO Lex Fenwick. Its mission, said department head Jack Levy, is to find solutions to problems that affect the publisher’s overall operations.” continued…

Privacy Reforms and Web TVs

Liat Clark of Wired reports, “The European Commission is off-track and will stifle innovation with its data protection proposals because it’s only just catching up with web 2.0, a term coined in the 90s, according to James Leaton Gray, head of information policy and compliance at the BBC. He issued this warning at the Westminster eForum seminar on eprivacy, flagging up the impracticalities of the proposed reforms, pointing out that the future of computing is in your TV — and the proposals aren’t taking this into account. ‘It makes me extremely nervous,’ said Gray. ‘If you look at IPTV, you’re connected to the internet and directly to thousands of TV channels across the world. The present remote control will become a search engine — it won’t be things you type into, it will be about the semantic web, accessing and exchanging data. The idea that it’s confounded to computers and a computer-based world is a fallacy’.” continued…

The Battle to Open Up Research Data

John Wilbanks of Nature.com recently opined, “An article that is free to read is not necessarily open for all uses — often, it cannot be reused for text mining or in derivative works, for example. The permitted uses depend on the copyright license used by the author. In my view, for an article to be considered truly open access, it has to meet the widely accepted definition in the Budapest Open Access Initiative — a set of recommendations laid out by leaders of the open-access movement in 2001. That is, users must be able to ‘read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited’.” continued…

Holovisions Launches Semantic Technology for Morphing Prose Text

Image morphing is a special effect in which a first image is gradually changed into a second image. Image morphing is often used to morph one person’s face into a second person’s face. In the middle of the image morphing process, a new face is created that combines elements of both. Image morphing has grown in popularity and use since its introduction in the 1980s.

Now, in 2013, it is possible to morph together two bodies of prose text in a manner that is analogous to the way in which image morphing morphs together two images. continued…

Zemanta Debuts Content Discovery Network

Zemanta, a semantic service that extracts entities within the text of a publisher’s content and suggests related media, links and tags to add to a work as it’s being written, has launched a content discovery network to complement its suggested recommendations for which authors create original content.

The focus here is on providing editorial control. Publishers can feature content recommendations from their site, other web sites (Zemanta has 300,000 publishers in its network), and advertisers, taking advantage of the option to let Zemanta’s semantic algorithms automatically make those selections for them or to take the manual content selection route. Another option is to blacklist sites that they don’t consider appropriate content sources.

And The Best Semantic Tech Solution SIIA CODiE Award Goes To….

The Software & Information Industry Association this year debuted a category for Best Semantic Technology Solution in its 2013 SIIA CODiE Awards. Two products were finalists in the category (see our story here), and yesterday the winner was announced. It was the Luxid Content Enrichment Platform from TEMIS Inc, which is used by publishers to automate the extraction of entities, relationships, concepts and topics from their digital assets, and augment content enrichment and linking.

It won out over finalist Elsevier with its ClinicalKey solution for helping doctors and clinicians search Elsevier’s medical and surgical content smarter and faster. ClinicalKey maps content to Elsevier’s proprietary medical taxonomy, and builds relationships using a semantic framework to faster and more clinically relevant answers. Elsevier, by the way, just ended the voting for its own ClinicalKey Key Innovator Awards, with the prize being a $10,000 grant to a U.S.-based hospital, medical school or institution that has demonstrated the most innovative use of information and technology to save lives and improve patient care.

BBC News Lab to Explore Linked Data Technology

Matt Shearer of the BBC recently reported that the BBC’s News Lab team will begin exploring linked data technologies. He writes, “Hi I’m Matt Shearer, delivery manager for Future Media News. I manage the delivery of the News Product and I also lead on BBC News Labs. BBC News Labs is an innovation project which was started during 2012 to help us harness the BBC’s wider expertise to explore future opportunities. Generally speaking BBC News believes in allowing creative technologists to innovate and influence the direction of the News product. For example the delivery of BBC News’ responsive design mobile service started in 2011 when we made space for a multidiscipline project to explore responsive design opportunities for BBC News. With this in mind the BBC News team setup News Labs to explore linked data technologies.” continued…

Google’s Structured Data Take Over

Barbara Starr of Search Engine Land recently posed the question, is Google hijacking semantic markup and structured data? She writes, “In 2012, I started a series, How The Major Search And Social Engines Are Using The Semantic Web, which took us to a point in time around September 2012. Since then, there have been further interesting developments. In this article, I am going to focus on recent developments that are search engine and/or Google specific, then take a further look back in search engine history with the assumption (for you history and strategy lovers,) that a successful strategy used once, may well be used again in similar circumstances.” continued…

New Working Draft of RDF 1.1 Concepts and Abstract Syntax

Ivan Herman of the W3C reports, “The W3C RDF Working Group has published a Working Draft of RDF 1.1 Concepts and Abstract Syntax. RDF 1.1 Concepts and Abstract Syntax defines an abstract syntax (a data model) which serves to link all RDF-based languages and specifications. The abstract syntax has two key data structures: RDF graphs are sets of subject-predicate-object triples, where the elements may be IRIs, blank nodes, or datatyped literals. They are used to express descriptions of resources. RDF datasets are used to organize collections of RDF graphs, and comprise a default graph and zero or more named graphs. This document also introduces key concepts and terminology, and discusses datatyping and the handling of fragment identifiers in IRIs within RDF graphs.” continued…
