The jobs market continues to paint a confusing picture. Last week, news came that the private sector added close to 160,000 jobs in October, bringing the total number of new jobs it’s added since January to 1.1 million. Yet unemployment held at 9.6 percent in October, and now a new Bureau of Labor Statistics report says that the number of job openings shrank at the end of September compared to August, from 3.1 million to 2.9 million – though more people were hired in September compared to August.

Against that backdrop, it seems a good time to take another look at what the job market looks like specifically for those with semantic web, linked data and social media-related skills.

Our takeaways start at Monster.com, which itself is running in beta its Seeker Job Search that uses its 6Sense Semantic Search technology to increase results relevancy. It has some 90 jobs available for a search that features ‘semantic web.’

 We noted here Federated Media’s purchase of a portion of TextDigger’s semantic technology for helping publishers get more value out of their inventory and better search engine recognition.  Well, it looks like the company is on the hunt for more help on its Semantic Technologies team in building its next-generation suite of semantic products and tools for its media network:

 

And weren’t we just talking here about paying closer attention to the front-end experience? Maybe the message is taking hold in a way that job seekers in the space should notice. Sabre Holdings seems to be on the same page, searching for a user interface developer with both web designer and programming expertise, including experience developing standards-based websites using valid, semantic markup for structure, “in order to build the working front-ends to high-impact websites and web-based applications.” (What will your next Travelocity booking experience be like?!)

 

 Here’s one that’s just fun to note, taken from the “you-say-Semantic, I-say-Symantec” pages (disambiguation, anyone?):

It seemed appropriate to turn to TwitJobSearch – which, as its name implies, is a job search engine for Twitter – to see what opportunities might be cooking on the social media analytics front.

Continuing along that social media track, job search engine Indeed.com reports that social media analytics seems to be more or less steadily moving up as a career prospect:

Of all the job trends, Indeed shows that ‘Facebook’ specifically has been the fastest-growing term, with the more generic ‘social media’ taking third place, and Twitter is at #6. 

Semantic web jobs seem to be trending back up after a bit of a downslide:

But even more interesting is what an exploration of some related terms shows. For example, a search on “ontology” brings up among the listings a post looking for subject matter expertise around creating an ontology for HR systems.

We’ve also recently been exploring how linked data can be critical to enterprises, assuming some of the kinks get worked out. There are plenty of jobs out there that talk about linking data, the old-fashioned way among relational data sets, a fewer number specify  But there’s the occasional gleam of hope – though still more government than enterprise-oriented – like this one off of Simplyhired.com:
