Aylien Takes Text Analytics API To New Audience

aylien imageYou may have heard about Aylien awhile back, when it was trying to carve a niche as a consumer products company that used its text analysis API to inform its delivery of articles via a news reader interface to the masses. It’s changed tactics since then: Now the company — which recently brought semantic web expert and lecturer at NUI Galway and Insight Centre Dr. John Breslin on-board as an advisor — is orienting its text analysis and news APIs to media and PR organizations, as well as other industries and developers.

“It makes a lot of sense for customers,” says CEO and founder Parsa Ghaffari. “The biggest volume of information on the Internet is represented as text, which is obviously unstructured information. Through NLP you can obviously try to find structure in text, …so we think it can be seen as a first step to the semantic web vision to enable any developer or startup to extract that structure and find the value in it.”

Aylien’s text analytics API consists of eight distinct natural language processing, information retrieval, and machine learning APIs for article extraction, article summarization, classification, entity extraction, concept extraction, language detection, sentiment analysis and hashtag suggestions.

Wikimeta Project’s Evolution Includes Commercial Ambitions and Focus On Text-Mining, Semantic Annotation Robustness

Wikimeta, the semantic tagging and annotation architecture for incorporating semantic knowledge within documents, websites, content management systems, blogs and applications, this month is incorporating itself as a company called Wikimeta Technologies.  Wikimeta, which has a heritage linked with the NLGbAse project, last year was provided as its own web service.

Dr. Eric Charton, Ph.D, MSc at École Polytechnique de Montréal, is project leader and author of the Wikimeta code. The NLGbAse project was conducted by Charton at the University of Avignon as part of his Ph.D. Thesis.  The Semantic Web Blog recently hosted an email discussion with him to learn more about the Wikimeta architecture and its evolution.

 

The Semantic Web Blog: Tell us about the NLGBase project and Wikimeta’s relationship to it.

Charton: NLGbAse is an ontology extracted from Wikipedia. It is used in Wikimeta as a resource for semantic disambiguation. For each Wikipedia document (aka Semantic Concept), NLGbAse provides various ways of word-writing (for example, “General Motors” can be written “GM Company”, “GM”, “General Motors Corp” and so on), used for detection.

The Future of Video on the Web: A Discussion with Googler Thomas Steiner About the “Semantic Web Video (SemWebVid)” Project

During the recent SemTech SF event I met with Thomas Steiner of Google Italy to discuss a recent project entitled “SemWebVid.” In addition to working for Google, Steiner is working on his Ph.D. at UPC.edu in Barcelona, Spain. I found Steiner’s project fascinating because it provides a glimpse at how semantic technology will change the way we view, find, and interact with online video in future.

The SemWebVid project is part of a European Union research project entitled “I-SEARCH.”  Google, in addition to other companies, is one of the industry sponsors of this project. All of the research from this project is being done “in the open” and the findings are available to the public via published papers.
