Daedalus (which The Semantic Web Blog originally covered here) has just made its Textalytics meaning-as-a-service APIs available for Excel and GATE (General Architecture for Text Engineering), a JAVA suite of tools used for natural language processing tasks, including information extraction in many languages. Connecting its semantic analysis tools with these systems is one step in a larger plan to extend its integration capabilities with more API plug-ins.
“For us, integration options are a way to lower barriers to adoption and to foster the development of an ecosystem around Textalytics,” says Antonio Matarranz, who leads marketing and sales for Daedalus. The three main ecosystem scenarios, he says, include personal productivity tools, of which the Excel add-in is an example, and NLP environments, of which GATE is an example. “But UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Applications) is also a target,” he says. The list also is slated to include content management systems and search engines, among them open source systems like WordPress, Drupal, and Elasticsearch.
At the Semantic Technology and Business Conference in New York City last week, attendees got to hear a lot about how semantic technology is influencing various sectors, such as government (see our stories here and here) and media (see this article and this one). Another prominent one on display: pharmaceuticals.
Pharma, for example, was the driving use case for the update to Callimachus that focuses on helping users deal with data that’s external to the framework for data-driven applications, David Wood, CTO of Callimachus project sponsor 3 Round Stones, told The Semantic Web Blog at the event. A session on Tuesday last week saw Lee Feigenbaum, vp of marketing at Cambridge Semantics, which makes the Anzo express and Anzo Enterprise solutions, put forth a case for semantic tech as being key to data integration and interoperability in the sector, as well. “Can semantic web technologies break down enterprise data silos just as they break down document silos on the web?” he said. “The answer to the question is, “Of course.” Compared to the web, the data silo challenges of even the largest pharmaceuticals organization is relatively minor.”
Kerstin Forsberg has written an article discussing a presentation she and Frederik Malfait gave regarding the use of semantic models for CDISC-based standard and metadata management, pointing to case studies at AstraZeneca and Roche. She writes, “In AstraZeneca we have a new program called Integrative Informatics (i2) establishing the components required to let a linked data cloud grow across R&D.
