Introduction to: Triplestores

Badge: Hello, my name is TriplestoreTriplestores are Database Management Systems (DBMS) for data modeled using RDF. Unlike Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), which store data in relations (or tables) and are queried using SQL, triplestores store RDF triples and are queried using SPARQL.

A key feature of many triplestores is the ability to do inference. It is important to note that a DBMS typically offers the capacity to deal with concurrency, security, logging, recovery, and updates, in addition to loading and storing data. Not all Triplestores offer all these capabilities (yet).

Triplestore Implementations

Triplestores can be broadly classified in three types categories: Native triplestores, RDBMS-backed triplestores and NoSQL triplestores. Read more

SemTech Spotlight: Cray Inc.

Steve Scott, CTO of Cray will be on hand at next week’s Semantic Technology Conference to discuss Cray’s Extreme Multithreaded Technology (XMT) System. According to the article, “The Cray XMT System is designed specifically to run challenging big data graph analytics workloads that bring traditional systems to their knees. Many problems in the semantic space are particularly well suited for this system and the Cray XMT holds the promise of advancing the application of semantic technologies to big data analysis. This talk will describe the motivation, architecture and potential application areas for this unique machine.” Read more

Big Data presents a Big Opportunity?

Earlier this month, I travelled to Silicon Valley to attend O’Reilly Media‘s new conference, Strata. The theme was data — especially ‘Big’ Data — and in amongst the Hadoops and the Cassandras and the BigTables and the Map/Reduces, I was searching for the companies making connections to the semantic technologies routinely discussed by readers of SemanticWeb.com. Disappointingly, direct correlations were hard to find, but there were some glimmers of recognition that may benefit from the community’s attention.
