Andreas Blumauer reports that the PoolParty team has released an improved version of their WordPress plugin which enables linked data enrichments. Blumauer writes, “Users and developers benefit from: automatic annotation of all blog entries displayed as tooltips; a comfortable search facility with auto-complete over all concepts from the linked thesaurus including semantic search over the whole blog; an integrated thesaurus browser; plus a corresponding linked data frontend including RDF/XML serialization of the underlying thesaurus + SPARQL endpoint.” Read more

NYC Open Data has created a new Tumblr blog to showcase datasets and visualizations that the organization makes available to developers. According to the blog’s About Us page, “As part of Mayor Bloomberg’s commitment to transparency and innovation, over 800 (and counting!) city datasets are now online for anyone in New York or around the world to explore and access via an API for deeper, real-time integration into apps and websites.” Read more

The Cogito blog concluded its coverage of last week’s Semantic Technology Conference with a recap of Laura Campbell’s closing keynote address. Campbell is the director of strategic initiatives at the Library of Congress. Her keynote was entitled Semantic Technology at the Library of Congress: “Campbell began her presentation by explaining that one of the most pressing problems in wanting to ensure the acquisition and preservation of the largest collection of knowledge and easy access to the best examples of American creativity (strategic objectives of the Library of Congress), is management of our changing connections to available content.” Read more

The Cogito blog has been reporting some of the highlights at the Semantic Technology Conference this week. Recently the writers at Cogito shone the spotlight on several presentations from the financial track. The blogger writes, “The speech that was the most interesting to me was that of Wells Fargo’s David Newman. Newman argues that traditional information management systems are no longer sufficient to effectively manage the continuously growing flow of data. The reasons are varied, and include the fact that the increasing amount of information, without an intelligent filtering system, can lead to higher, unsustainable infrastructure costs.” Read more

In response to the recent news that Data.gov and other open government initiatives will be shutting down in a few weeks, the Sunlight Foundation is calling on you to save the data: “Some of the most important technology programs that keep Washington accountable are in danger of being eliminated. Data.gov, USASpending.gov, the IT Dashboard and other federal data transparency and government accountability programs are facing a massive budget cut, despite only being a tiny fraction of the national budget. Help save the data and make sure that Congress doesn’t leave the American people in the dark.” Read more
