Community Challenge: The Semantic Web in 140 Characters

As a community, we Semantic Webbers have done a poor job communicating our value clearly and concisely.

Last week, I stated the case in more detail at the Enterprise Semantics Blog, and Aaron Bradley continued it over at Google Plus (here and here).

Today, I bring you a challenge.

Describe a value of the Semantic Web clearly in 140 characters. Tweet it with the hashtag #SemWebRox.

Why a value and not the value? Because different people have different opinions on what the most important facet of the Semantic Web is. And since you can’t have more than one most important value, just stick to one, and make it convincing.

Why 140 characters? It’s not just Twitter. Restricting space in this way forces you to get the core of your argument. No elaboration. No amendments. Straight value.

Here is my attempt:

#SemanticWeb technologies are extremely flexible, saving time and money in any situation facing unsure or changing requirements. #SemWebRox

Write yours here or tweet it directly. We’ll aggregate them and include in a future post!

Czech Chapter of OKF Enters Incubation Phase

Kat Braybrooke reports that the Czech Republic has joined the Open Knowledge Foundation’s global open data community. Braybrooke writes, “The year 2011 has seen a sustained growth of interest in open data and open knowledge in the Czech Republic. There’s been a lot of discussions about the openness of the public sector, an uptake of open data principles, and an increasing investment in open data projects by NGOs, citizen activists, and other informal groups. Many successful open data events have taken place, such as the e-Democracy Day, Big Clean and Průhledná politika online offline (Transparent Politics Online Offline). Interesting applications have appeared, such as SmogAlarm, an Android app for tracking current levels of air pollution, or VášMajetek.cz (YourProperty.cz), which collects and publishes information about auctions of public property coming from different sources.” continued…

Synaptica Re-Vamps Taxonomy Warehouse

Synaptica has updated its informational website, Taxonomy Warehouse. According to the company, “This year we imported all of the content from the old Taxonomy Warehouse website into a Synaptica system and re-engineered the directory to become a semantically rich ontology. When you visit Taxonomy Warehouse, all the content and functionality you will see is dynamically generated from Synaptica. Besides providing the taxonomy community with lots of valuable content, we hope that the all-new Taxonomy Warehouse will provide a showcase for building and publishing ontologies.” continued…

Semantic Web – What’s Your Pitch?

People working in the Semantic Technology space are often asked for a clear, concise, easy to understand answer to “What is the Semantic Web?” My friend and colleague Brian Sletten recently said to me, “If you ask 10 Semantic Tech experts to define Semantic Technology, you’ll get 11 different answers – one from each of the experts and the one that represents what the listener hears.” continued…
