Nokusa EI Partners with Firestring on Semantic Engine, Serendipity

IT Web recently reported, “Nokusa EI has established a partnership with Firestring – one of the most significant new information management tools to arrive in the enterprise space. ‘The system has huge potential in using the principals of social media for business,’ says Kotze. ‘What we do as humans is collaborate. While an organisation may exist in the sense of bricks and mortar, it’s the interaction of people that actually constitutes the work of the company. Firestring allows people in large organisations to interact instinctively and organically, and in addition, it brings information and people together through its semantic engine. The engine, Serendipity, automatically tags information on behalf of users, which means manual indexing to bring structure to information is no longer necessary’.” continued…

Linked Data: The Future of Data Integration

John Walker of NXP recently discussed Linked Data as the future of data integration in the enterprise. He writes, “The main business drivers for this have, so far, been mostly internal: how to ensure product data is available across internal systems in an easy-to-use and efficient manner. In many areas simple XML messages and other B2B standards are applicable, but within a portfolio of over 20,000 products across a broad variety of functions and technology it simply is not possible to describe the complex properties of an electronic component with a handful of standard XML elements. Also the tree-based XML DOM soon starts to become a limitation when dealing with a highly-interlinked web of information. The answer (as it turns out) is quite simple: think graph.” continued…

‘Enterprises Need the Semantic Web’

Lee Feigenbaum has written an article for CMS Wire arguing that the Semantic Web is the “technology of choice” for the modern enterprise. He writes, “For over a decade the Semantic Web has been maligned, misconstrued and misunderstood. It’s been overhyped by its supporters while its critics have hung the albatross of artificial intelligence around its neck. Even its successes have been understated, often coming with little fanfare and without the mindshare and hype surrounding other trends such as Web 2.0, NoSQL or Big Data. So I wouldn’t fault you in the slightest if you were surprised, confused or downright skeptical when I claim that the Semantic Web is emerging as the technology of choice for tackling some of today’s most pressing challenges in enterprise information management. This article is the first in a series that will introduce and explain Semantic Web technologies and their role in enterprise information management today.” continued…

SindiceTech Helps Enterprises Build Private Linked Data Clouds

Last week The Semantic Web Blog covered the launch of the SindiceTech Assisted SPARQL Editor as an open source project, noting that SparQLed also is part of SindiceTech’s commercial suite for large enterprises building private linked data clouds. This week, we’ll dive a little deeper into SindiceTech and its progress since the founders of the Sindice web of data search engine turned their attention to focusing on the commercial application of its technology as a real-time semantic warehousing infrastructure, which leverages cloud computing for integrating and normalizing the massive amounts of data the enterprise must deal with.

As SindiceTech founder and CEO Giovanni Tummarello explains, companies actually approached his team to help them make a reality of their visions to use RDF and SPARQL, as the best knowledge representation and querying technologies available, by providing the missing scalability and stability. Sindice.com was evidence that the technology the team had developed could answer these enterprises’ needs; currently there are about 700 million semantically marked-up web pages indexed in the Sindice.com search engine, with a live updated index of some 80 billion triples daily. Its database is over 5 terabytes.

Explaining Semantic Technologies to the Enterprise

Lynda Moulton recently commented that over the last year the semantic web marketplace “has been increasingly active; new products emerge and discussion about what semantics might mean for the enterprise is constant. One thing that continues to strike me is the difficulty of explaining the meaning of, applications for, and context of semantic technologies. Those who embrace some concept of semantics are believers that search will benefit from ‘semantic technologies.’ What is less clear is how evangelists, developers, searchers and the average technology user can coalesce around the applications that will semantically enable enterprise search.” continued…

Promising Predictions for Semantic Technology in Enterprise

Scagliarini states, “Nowhere is there greater potential for semantic technology than in the enterprise, especially as companies increasingly understand the value and impact of critical information coming from outside the organization via social media outlets.”

He continues, “This information, in the form of unstructured data – comments on blogs and discussion forums, independent reviews, posts on Twitter, Facebook, etc. – has a great ability to influence the enterprise. It represents intelligence that, when coupled with internal data, can signal significant benefits for the bottom line.” continued…

Threat Management – Cyber Security Part 3

Threat Management is still a relatively new concept; there is no industry standard definition for it. In fact, the few people who are talking about it right now tend to view it from at least two very different perspectives – one a product focused approach to unifying perimeter security tools and two, a practice-focused management paradigm. As it evolves, Threat Management will eventually encompass both of those perspectives and will likely become perhaps the single most important element within any given Cyber Security solution.

Panel – How to Internally Market Semantic Web in Large Enterprises

Semantic Web technologies were designed from the ground up for disparate information integration. Disparate data and its impact on data quality and consistency remain one of the most difficult challenges facing large enterprises today. Yet, there has been relatively little use of Semantic Web technologies in these organizations.

The adoption of new technology by large enterprises has always been challenging. Recently, SOA and Web service technologies have had some success in making inroads to large enterprises, mainly due to their seemingly direct addressing of business process automation problems, which business executives could readily appreciate. In contrast, the Semantic Web has been nicknamed the "Pedantic Web" due to its frequently esoteric explanations from academics, hindering its adoption.

What is required is the ability to teach business leaders the value of the technology in terms that they can understand. Our panel includes technical leaders that have taken on this challenge and have succeeded in getting these somewhat trailing edge enterprises to embrace the technology. They now wish to share that experience. Topics covered in the panel include:

• What advantages of using Semantic Technologies over existing data integration tools such as ETL and EAI that really resonated with business leaders?
•	What objections to the technology has the panel experienced?
•	How did the panel address these objections?
•	How did members of the panel first introduce the technology?
•	How did members of the panel socialize the use of ontologies without it turning into and explanation of the "Pedantic Web"?
•	How did the panel address how Semantic Technologies fit in to the SOA strategies for the enterprise?

Social Tagging and the Enterprise: Does Tagging Work at Work?

Executive Summary

As social tagging grows increasingly popular on the Web, organizations are curious to see how this trendy Web 2.0 approach can benefit the business world. Social tagging allows users to employ their own language to organize and retrieve content, and encourages social collaboration between peers by making those tags visible to others. Organizations are thus looking to social tagging as a potential solution for increased findability on intranets, news/blog monitoring and collaboration in workgroups. The enterprise context is different however, and many of the elements that make social tagging work on the Web make it a challenge behind the firewall.
