A Semantic Analysis of the Final Presidential Debate

According to the company, “In this debate, Governor Romney spoke more, using shorter sentences with a slightly simpler construction (a total of 554 clauses with an average of two prepositions per clause), versus President Obama who used approximately three prepositions per clause (for a total of 393 clauses). As in the previous two debates, the language style and words choice of both candidates can be classified as usual or common, and likely reflect the candidates’ attempts to reach a wide and diverse electorate.” continued…

A Semantic Look at the Presidential Debates

Luca Scagliarini of Expert System reports, “This week’s presidential debate is being analyzed across the web on a number of fronts, from a factual analysis of what was said, to the number of tweets it prompted. Instead, we used our Cogito semantic engine to analyze the transcript of the debate through a semantic and linguistic lens. Cogito extracted the responses by question, breaking sentences down to their granular detail. This analysis allows us to look at the individual language elements to better understand what was said, as well as how the combined effect of word choice, sentence structure and sentence length might be interpreted by the audience.” continued…

Launched in June 2012, the new search portal helps customers quickly find the content they need, resulting in a 46% reduction in call center requests. The advanced semantic engine developed for ING DIRECT is a combination of two powerful semantic products: Cogito Search Explore Engine for semantic search and analysis, and Cogito Answers for natural language processing. Together, they bring a complete semantic and linguistic understanding to customer queries, taking into account variations in language such as slang or abbreviations, and result in the effective and immediate retrieval of answers to online requests.” continued…

Semantics in Customer Service

The Cogito team has been working on applying semantic technologies to customer service operations. The team writes, “We’re proud to announce our work with Vodafone, one of the world’s largest mobile communications groups. Working with technology partner Assist, we’re using our Cogito Answers semantic platform to provide SMS based customer service that is now successfully handling more that 500,000 SMS requests each month. When a user sends an SMS to the system—“how much will I pay for calls to London?”—Cogito Answers interprets and categorizes the request and quickly retrieves the answer from the internal knowledge base.” continued…

Analyzing The Data: How the World Reacted to Steve Jobs’ Passing

In the weeks since Steve Jobs’ untimely passing, the Cogito team has used semantic technology to sample and analyze sentiment about Jobs on the internet: “Twitter was the place where many immediately went to share quotes, links to online memorials, commercials, cartoons and photos from years past, and to comment about anything and everything related to Jobs.” continued…

Where Semantic Technologies are Making a Difference

The Expert System team participated in a panel at the recent SemTechBiz conference in London and came back with some positive insights about where semantic technologies are making a difference. First off, semantic technologies are “Improving processing of anaphora, which are used commonly in social media communications, such as posts on blogs, Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. The interpretation of anaphora is important for a correct analysis of sentiment among several posts, or even in the same post where information is not always explicitly expressed. Correct processing of anaphora allows you to almost double the collection of opinions and sentiment expressed online (i.e., ‘I love the new iPhone’ and, a few posts later ‘But I don’t love it any more’ where the person is still talking about the iPhone).” continued…

What is a Semantic Platform?

To begin: Semantics is the study of meaning. It focuses on the relation between words and phrases and due to the relationship what they mean in context. Semantics is a game changer when it comes to the management of large volumes of structured and unstructured data. Having the ability to understand words in context using lexical or linguistic semantics will drive linked data initiatives and ultimately, as many believe, will make Web 3.0 a reality. With this in mind, possessing a “semantic platform” is the new marketing target for many software companies and they are quickly moving to describe themselves as a semantic platform in hopes of aligning themselves with the semantic snowball as it continues to gather speed.
