Semantic Tech in Health Information Retrieval

Philipp Gratzel Von Gratz of Medical Xpress writes, “Imagine a hospital where patient data from numerous sources is made accessible to ward physicians with the help of hyperlinks and intelligent indexing. Imagine a healthcare system that hands its patients – not an envelope or a CD-ROM – but an integrated dataset that allows them to truly understand their illness, and even use the Internet to obtain additional information. Imagine a radiologist who uses semantic technologies to navigate smoothly through the myriad imaging data. Welcome to the future of semantic technologies in health information retrieval.” continued…

With over 30 million worldwide blog sites analyzed, the study provides fascinating insights into emotions by stage of cancer and emotions surrounding key drugs prescribed in head and neck, ovarian, breast, lung, colorectal, hepatocellular and renal cancers. It also identifies key opinion leaders(KOP’s) and influencers across the blogosphere.

In addition, the study has classified every Oncology drug mentioned across the blogosphere for its intensity of mention by category of disease. Key metrics such as emotions over time for competitive oncology drugs, emotions around treatment type (medication, radiation, surgery, etc.) as well as cohorts of physicians, patients, nurses and caregivers were analyzed. BehaviorMatrix presented findings around one of the disease categories studied, breast cancer, at the ePharma Summit. continued…

Interoperability in Health Care: What’s the Hold Up?

Kathleen Roney of Becker’s Hospital Review recently opined, “In order for the healthcare industry to move toward preventive care and population health management, clinical information needs to flow freely across networks and between hospitals and physicians. For this reason, healthcare organizations need interoperability — efficient yet secure means for IT systems and software applications to communicate and exchange patient data. While CMS focused the latest stage of its meaningful use program on measures and objectives to encourage interoperability, the effect of that will not be seen until later in 2013 and early 2014 when providers begin to incorporate those measures and objectives into their clinical work. ” continued…

Proposed Health/Medical Schema Published

Schema.org is often talked about in terms of its SEO benefit, but a recent announcement by Aaron Brown of Google shows a focus on health and medical content on the web. Brown has announced a proposed health/medical schema that is currently open to the public for feedback. According to the introduction, “This page describes a schema.org-based schema that webmasters and content publishers can use to mark up health and medical content on the web. Like all schema.org schemas, the health and medical schema is intended to make it easier for people to find the right web pages by exposing structured information contained in web pages to search engines, and may also enable other applications that make use of the structure.” continued…

3M Opens Access to Healthcare Data Dictionary

3M has opened up the 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary under an agreement with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. According to the article, “The 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary will provide the core technology to enable semantic interoperability for the joint DoD/VA integrated Electronic Health Record (iEHR), making it possible to share medical knowledge and secure patient data between care providers at U.S. military treatment facilities located around the world and VA Medical Centers. Access to actionable clinical information whenever and wherever care is delivered will enable safer, better coordinated, and higher quality care for the country’s 32 million veterans, active service members, and their families.” continued…

How Healthline is Using Semantic Technology to Promote Health

West Shell, CEO of Healthline is turning to the semantic web to compete with internet health giants like WebMD. Wade Roush reports, “Shell says 170 million Americans turn to the Internet every month for help managing their health. And Healthline, the 130-employee company he’s been leading since 2005, captures a huge portion of them: roughly 100 million per month, spread across the many Web properties, such as Yahoo Health, AARP.com, and DoctorOz.com, that use the company’s search tools and medical content. It’s one of the three largest U.S. providers of consumer health information on the Web, the others being WebMD and Everyday Health.” continued…
