Heck, even if you’re not in marketing, you can well imagine the challenge. Marketing has to be in charge of the customer’s digital experience, yet digital life is changing at a rapid pace. Who’s Using Google+?

Data visualization firm Bime surveyed Google+ users a few weeks ago with unsurprising results – “users were mostly young American men working in technology.” However, Bime hasn’t let up. The company recently released “an updated visualization that breaks down Google Plus demographics including the month of August, now that the service has had some time to grow. This survey covered 10 million users, more than twice the size of the previous one, and some things haven’t changed. About 70% of Google Plus users still identify as men, and the vast bulk of them are American. One major shift has taken place, though: While the updated post doesn’t have the age numbers (which came from a different dataset last time), the occupation data show that students have overwhelmingly displaced tech workers, though all the same tech jobs as before dominate the rest of the top spots.” Read more

Visualizing Data at the Guardian

A recent article from takes a look at how their data journalists breakdown datasets to generate interesting stories. The process is similar to how datasets are utilized on and similar open government sites: “Before a dataset results in a data journalism story, there’s a whole process of sifting and finessing and generally sorting the data out. The split is roughly 70% tidying up the data, 30% doing the fun stuff of visualising and presenting it. So, how do we get through that 70%?” Read more

Infograph: Open Government Projects has shared a great infograph that answers the question, “How Many Open Gov Projects Are There (and How Do You Find Them Fast)?” According to the post, “Last year, former Deputy CTO for Open Government Beth Noveck reached out to GovLoop Founder Steve Ressler about leveraging the energy of community members to complete a gargantuan task: read through all of the Open Government Plans and compile a list of the hundreds of projects named within them.
