Start Your Innovation Engines

Interop New York took place at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan last week. The semantic web wasn’t a focus of the show, but innovation had its place among the various keynotes and sessions. And innovation certainly is a theme that goes hand-in-hand with the semantic web.

byzIn that spirit, we’ll share some comments from some of the speakers about how they embraced concepts and argued for changes that they believed would make them more innovative companies – even when that was a scary thing to do. With any luck, their experience, advice and thoughts may give you some direction when it comes to taking your ideas about how semantic web technologies could help your own business become more innovative, and acting on them:

  •  From Michael Bryzek, co-founder and CTO, Gilt: In discussing the e-retailer’s move to a micro-services architecture, which he said supports the concept of autonomous innovation and is part of implementing a culture where employees can thrive, Bryzek told the audience that accepting the risk of failure was the first step.  “Start with the assumption you’ll fail,” he said. “If you want a chance at innovation, that alleviates some of the pressure because we all agree we are going to do something risky and we are in it together now.” There are only so many great companies in the world, and it’s true you might not make it to be among them, but “it sure is fun and great to work together to try and build something amazing.”

Make Innovation Happen

rsz_innoconstraintThe Plante Moran 2013 Innovation Survey that was recently released doesn’t have anything specifically to do with semantic, Linked Data, AI, machine learning or related technologies. But it’s hard to ignore their place in innovation, which 94 out of 100 business leaders responded is a priority for them.

The survey reported that more than 90 percent of leaders saw innovation as being important to sustainability and growth; 85 percent recorded that it matters to new or improved processes; and more than 70 percent saw its value for improved products or services, to name just a few critical areas. Most readers of this blog likely will recognize that such outcomes are often realized by companies that follow semantic and other smart and innovative technologies down paths of innovation to new offerings and other key returns (Google anyone?).

Companies still experience constraints on making innovation happen, though, one of them being lack of access to new technology, according to the survey. But the report also finds that collaboration was considered a possible jumpstarter for innovation among three out of four of the respondents.

The Secret of Google, Microsoft, & Facebook’s Innovation: Semantic Tech

Charles H. Silver of Wired Insights reports, “Google and Bing are more than just search engines – they are the very definition of how to leverage big data. Since their inception, they have been using data to build products from search, advertising to Translate to Play Music. However, data alone is no longer the golden nugget to being a successful company, in fact it’s become a pain point for many. Being able to provide inference within context to data is the next big step in data management technology.” Read more

Facing the Future: New Technologies to Look For

Esther Schindler of IT World recently discussed a number of new technologies that have a definite cool factor in addition to plenty of real world applications. She focuses on facial recognition technology: “The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology used clever geek bait to attract me to its booth: video clips from The Big Bang Theory. Formally, the project ‘focuses on the exploration of new methods in computer vision to enable detection and analysis of faces and people in both images and video’… For instance, touching the screen can bring up the actor’s record on (destroying any argument with your spouse that begins, ‘Really, that’s the same actor who was in an episode of Firefly!’), or enabling better video search results (such as, ‘Show me all the scenes with both Sheldon and Penny’).” Read more

Innovation at the Open Data Institute

James Vincent of The Independent recently wrote, “Officially launched on 4 of December the Open Data Institute (ODI) is an independent, non-profit and non-partisan company that aims to become the UK’s premier academy of big data. Considering the current hype surrounding terms such as ‘big data’, there are some that might view this new initiative with suspicion but the ODI seems part of an understated if confident shift in how the UK is taking advantage of a natural resource of the information age: data. The project was first conceived by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and the Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton Nigel Shadbolt. The pair made a joint statement in The Times, detailing their vision for data-driven innovation and increased government transparency regarding this information.” Read more

Standards Orgs Getting Behind OpenStand

Logo for Open-Stand.orgLeading standards organizations are endorsing OpenStand principles that hope to drive innovation and commerce, a recent article reports. It states, “Five leading global organizations — IEEE, Internet Architecture Board (IAB), Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Internet Society and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)—today announced that they have signed a statement affirming the importance of a jointly developed set of principles establishing a modern paradigm for global, open standards. The shared ‘OpenStand’ principles—based on the effective and efficient standardization processes that have made the Internet and Web the premiere platforms for innovation and borderless commerce—are proven in their ability to foster competition and cooperation, support innovation and interoperability and drive market success.” Read more
