Semantic Web Gets Closer To The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is coming, but it needs a semantic backbone to flourish. With some 25 billion devices expected to be connected to the Internet by 2015 and 50 billion by 2020, providing interoperability among the things on the IoT “is one of the most fundamental requirements to support object addressing, tracking, and discovery as well as information representation, storage, and exchange.” So write the authors of Semantics for the Internet of Things: Early Progress and Back to the Future, Payam Barnaghi and Wei Wang, Centre for Communication Systems Research, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK and Cory Henson, Kno.e.sis – Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-enabled Computing.

“The suite of technologies developed in the Semantic Web … such as ontologies, semantic annotation, Linked Data and semantic Web services … can be used as principal solutions for the purpose of realizing the IoT,” they state. “Defining an ontology and using semantic descriptions for data will make it interoperable for users and stakeholders that share and use the same ontology.”

Applying semantic technologies to IoT, however, has several research challenges, the authors note, pointing out that IoT and using semantics in IoT is still in its early days. Being in on the ground floor of this movement is undeniably exciting to the research community, including people such as Konstantinos Kotis, Senior Research Scientist at University of the Aegean, and IT Manager in the regional division of the Samos and Ikaria islands at North Aegean Regional Administration Authority.

Universities Put Cash Towards Helping HomeGrown Tech Startups Along

Image Photo Courtesy Flickr/401(K) 2012

Universities play an important role in advancing the technology ecosystem, semantic technology included. Look for starters at work done at The Tetherless World Constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Wright State University’s Kno.e.sis Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-enabled Computing, MIT, and the Digital Enterprise Research Institute located at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

In addition to driving technology ever forward, institutions like these and others also provide a home for incubating good ideas that could become good businesses. Music discovery service Seevl and the enterprise-focused SindiceTech are two examples of semantic spin-outs from DERI, for instance, while MIT Media Lab gave birth to commercial properties with semantic underpinnings including music intelligence platform The Echo Nest. The Kno.e.sis Center points work it’s doing in the commercial direction, too: Its LinkedIn profile description notes that its “work is predominantly multidisciplinary, and multi-institutional, often involving industry collaborations and significant systems developing, with an eye towards real-world impact, technology licensing, and commercialization.”

Given the projects with commercial prospects underway within their own houses, it would seem there’s opportunity for universities themselves to look for even more ways to contribute to that success. And that’s just what the University of Minnesota is doing: This week it said that it’s launching a $20 million seed fund over a ten-year timeframe to support the innovative ideas to which its campus plays host.

Election 2012: The Semantic Recap

There’s no such thing as too much post-election coverage, is there? Alright, maybe there is. But we couldn’t let things die down without at least a nod to those in our space that have delivered the semantic industry’s own take on the topic.

Here are a few you may want to review:

Twitris Election Insights:

“The Twitris system had an amazing night–while Nate Silver’s model might have received well deserved attention, Twitris gave better indications and insights and large majority of the polls,” wrote Dr. Amit Sheth, Kno.e.sis Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-enabled Computing director and LexisNexis Ohio Eminent Scholar, in an email to us. The semantic social web application (first covered here) is a project of Kno.e.sis at Wright State University.

Semantic App Helps Researchers Understand Prescription Drug Abuse

There’s been a lot of attention given to the issue of prescription drug abuse, in the wake of violent crimes such as one last year that left four people dead in a pharmacy shooting in Suffolk County, New York. A recent study from the Workers Compensation Research Institute also shows that prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States, with over fifteen thousand people dying last year from an overdose. And, the U.S. Senate in late May approved an amendment to reclassify drugs that contain hydrocodone, a highly-addictive substance found in Vicodin and Lortabas, among other drugs, as Schedule II substances, while giving law enforcement more tools to monitor distribution of such drugs and also decreasing access to them for non-medical purposes.

What, you may ask, does any of this have to do with semantic technologies? Dr. Amit P. Sheth, Wright State University Kno.e.sis Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-enabled Computing director and LexisNexis Ohio Eminent Scholar, and Dr. Raminta Daniulaityte of the school’s Center for Interventions, Treatment and Addictions Research (CITAR), have a ready answer : PREDOSE, an application for understanding pain-killer drug abuse through the semantic analysis of social media conversations. More specifically, it’s automated data collection and analysis tools to process web-based data to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of addicts, related to buprenorphine, OxyContin and other pharmaceutical opioids. It’s a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project created by a partnership between Kno.e.sis and the CITAR.
