There’s a growing focus on the opportunity for semantic technology to help out with managing media assets – and with making money off of them, too. Last week, The Semantic Web Blog covered the EU-funded project Media Mixer for repurposing and reusing media fragments across borders on the Web. Also hailing from Europe – France, to be exact – is Perfect Memory, which aims to support the content management, automatic indexing and asset monetizing of large-scale multimedia.
Perfect Memory, which was a finalist at this spring’s SemTechBiz semantic start-up competition, has implemented its platform at Belgian TV broadcaster and radio RTBF, for its GEMS semantic-based multimedia browser prototype that was a runner-up at IBC 2013 this fall. In September it also received a 600K Euro investment from SOFIMAC Partners to extend its development efforts, platform, and market segments, as well as protect its innovations with patent filings.
“Our idea is to reinvent media asset management systems,” says Steny Solitude, CEO of Perfect Memory.
Earlier this year Embarcadero Technologies began discussing its product roadmap designed to help companies succeed at metadata governance management (see our story here). Today the vendor releases its metadata governance platform, Embarcadero Connect.
“It’s about making database tools smarter and users experts, about letting both database and business professionals to make better use of the data resources they have while aligning with governance, compliance and security initiatives,” says Henry Olson, director of product management.
There’s the job of dealing with Big Data, he agrees, but equally an urgent challenge is dealing with data complexity of the type he describes bedeviling one of Embarcadero’s mid-sized customers in the financial services sector. During a recent chat that customer described how it had several hundred systems and 380,000 distinct data elements.

Content intelligence at scale. That’s the promise of the new Temnos platform from the company of the same name. Aimed equally at publishing networks that want to do a better job monetizing their output and brands with their own content initiatives, Temnos delivers metadata and metacontent for every URL sent its way, with the goal of helping the user understand its strengths and weaknesses, what audiences are primed to respond to it, how it might be repackaged to better direct to groups of readers or advertisers, what alternate headlines can be drawn out, and what summaries can be used, with the user’s choice of a more optimistic or pessimistic slant, low- or high-brow angle, and other features.
“It’s a good time to do this because both marketing advertising players and publishers and publishing networks are all hungry to make their products better,” says Temnos founder and executive chairman Tim Musgrove, who founded advanced semantic search and corpus analytics company TextDigger, which was acquired by Federated Media in 2010. Musgrove was Federated Media’s chief scientist in its Data Science Group until June, and Federated Media is one of the early adopters of the Temnos platform. “They find they can get a lot more leverage out of content marketing by doing this,” says Musgrove, helping to boost the CPM earned from marketers. “They can package their campaigns in a way that feels like it’s narrowing the targeting and not narrowing the inventory.”
Darrell Etherington of Tech Crunch recently reported, “After a successful pilot project, Tel Aviv startup Jinni [a company we have covered multiple times over recent years], a provider of natural language processing-based video content recommendations, has been chosen by Xbox to power its Xbox content catalog recommendations over the course of a multi-year licensing agreement. Jinni wouldn’t reveal the terms of the deal, but it will bring their tech front and center to the Xbox and its show and movie library.” Read more

David Weir of 7×7.com reports, “Everpix has been building a semantic sorting platform for the past 18 months which takes advantage of the metadata attached to digital photos and automatically sorts them into a visual timeline of your life… The first layer of organization is by time, since that is part of the metadata embedded in each photo, and very often location as well. Everpix analyzes the photos for other elements and groups those that are collections – such as shots from a concert or a trip. ‘We add a semantic layer to your photos that helps classify them by the various elements our technology recognizes,’ says Latour. ‘We can recognize if is a close-up, whether it’s outside or inside, a dinner, flowers, at a beach, etc. We have about 50 categories a photo can be automatically classified as in’.” Read more
