Aylien Takes Text Analytics API To New Audience

aylien imageYou may have heard about Aylien awhile back, when it was trying to carve a niche as a consumer products company that used its text analysis API to inform its delivery of articles via a news reader interface to the masses. It’s changed tactics since then: Now the company — which recently brought semantic web expert and lecturer at NUI Galway and Insight Centre Dr. John Breslin on-board as an advisor — is orienting its text analysis and news APIs to media and PR organizations, as well as other industries and developers.

“It makes a lot of sense for customers,” says CEO and founder Parsa Ghaffari. “The biggest volume of information on the Internet is represented as text, which is obviously unstructured information. Through NLP you can obviously try to find structure in text, …so we think it can be seen as a first step to the semantic web vision to enable any developer or startup to extract that structure and find the value in it.”

Aylien’s text analytics API consists of eight distinct natural language processing, information retrieval, and machine learning APIs for article extraction, article summarization, classification, entity extraction, concept extraction, language detection, sentiment analysis and hashtag suggestions.

A Fertile Field For Semantic Tech: Social CRM

When it comes to social CRM, it’s a world of semantics, and text and sentiment analytics.

Recently Gartner released its Magic Quadrant report on the space, and a reading of it makes it pretty clear that the category, which the research group defines as “a business strategy that generates opportunities for sales, marketing and customer service, while also benefiting online communities,” demands such intelligence.

Semgel Gets Semantic With Crunchbase Data

If the spreadsheet is the window into enterprise data, what is the window into the emerging web of data? How to build that windows is the question Harish Kumar wanted to explore, and it’s the question that he would like to answer with the technology behind his startup Semgel.

“If you have disparate data sets distributed across the world, how to make it simple to gather that and start analyzing that,” Kumar says. The application from the new venture is based on semantic web technologies, at its core being capable of consuming RDF/OWL data of all kinds. Right now, it is showcasing the capability by letting users search crunchbase.com for tech companies, investors and people and instantly create databases by grabbing one or more of these entities.

New Version of OpenCalais in the Works

Calais recently broke the news that a new release of OpenCalais will begin beta testing in a matter of weeks. The article states, “Under the covers there are a number of improvements to our processing pipeline. As an end user you won’t see these – but they set the stage for greater flexibility in the future. On the user-facing side of the equation you’ll see a number of new entities, facts and events related primarily to politics and conflict (both intra- and international). Doesn’t look like either of those will be going away soon, so we thought they were worth implementing. Look for new information on candidates, party affiliation and arms purchases, among others.” Read more

Dynamic Semantic Publishing for Beginners, Part 3

Even as semantic web concepts and tools are underpinning revolutionary changes in the way we discover and consume information, people with even a casual interest in the semantic web have difficulty understanding how and why this is happening.  One of the most exciting application areas for semantic technologies is online publishing, although for thousands of small-to-medium sized publishers, unfamiliar semantic concepts are too intimidating to grasp the relevance of these technologies. This three-part series is part of my own journey to better understand how semantic technologies are changing the landscape for publishers of news and information.  Read Part 2.

So far we’ve looked at the “cutting edge” of dynamic semantic publishing (BBC Olympics) and we’ve seen what tools large publishers such as the New York Times, Associated Press, and Agence France Press are using to semantically annotate their content.

And we’ve learned how semantic systems help publishers “Do More With Less”- that is, automate a lot of the work organizing content and identifying key concepts, entities, and subjects- and “Do More With More” – combine their content with related linked open data and present it in different contexts.

You may still be asking at this point, “What makes this so novel and cool?  We know that semantic tools save time and resources.  And some people say semantic publishing is about search optimization, especially after the arrival of Google’s Knowledge Graph.  But the implications of semantic publishing are about oh so much more than search.    What semantic systems are really designed for, to use the phrase attributed to Don Turnbull, is “information discovery” and, if semantic standards and tools are widely adopted in the publishing world, this could have huge implications for content and data syndication.

Personal Digital Assistants For Everybody

The Semantic Web Blog mentioned here, there is speculation that the Siri intelligent personal digital assistant technology may come to light in Apple’s fall iOS 5 release. Which is all well and good for users on Apple’s mobile platforms, but myBantu founder and vice president of products and strategy Bharath Yadla sees an opportunity to bring personalized recommendations for entertainment to a wider swath of the populace. The iPhone and Android version of its application, to join its web and Facebook applications. officially launch next week.

“We see absolutely a great opportunity with other platforms from a mobile standpoint,” he says. “And when you leverage the application on Facebook, that is a predominant presence.”

What users are leveraging in this intelligent assistant is its ActiveRelevance platform for providing relevant and personalized recommendations based on their profiles and queries. The platform leverages both artificial intelligence and social relevance, assessing some nine dimensions, including personal interests, proximity of choices, popularity, and peer influence, in order to deliver a handful or two of results. The social relevance comes by way of crowd-sourcing recommendations from sites such as OpenTable and Rotton Tomatoes, friends on social networking platforms, and the output of search as well as semantic engines. Users can enter their requirements in natural language, such as top romantic restaurant nearby, for the ActiveRelevance engine to parse intent and come to some conclusions.

The Future of Video on the Web: A Discussion with Googler Thomas Steiner About the “Semantic Web Video (SemWebVid)” Project

During the recent SemTech SF event I met with Thomas Steiner of Google Italy to discuss a recent project entitled “SemWebVid.” In addition to working for Google, Steiner is working on his Ph.D. at UPC.edu in Barcelona, Spain. I found Steiner’s project fascinating because it provides a glimpse at how semantic technology will change the way we view, find, and interact with online video in future.

The SemWebVid project is part of a European Union research project entitled “I-SEARCH.”  Google, in addition to other companies, is one of the industry sponsors of this project. All of the research from this project is being done “in the open” and the findings are available to the public via published papers.

AOL Gets Some Semantics With Its Huffington Post Acquisition

What got a bit lost in the news about AOL’s purchase of the Huffington Post was that the deal also gets the Internet content provider some more semantic technology (the company’s past acquisitions include social/semantic matching Q-and-A platform Yedda, for example). In addition to The Huffington Post having been an early adopter of Thomson Reuters Open Calais semantic web service to identify and extract entities, facts and events for localized content initiatives, the site last year acquired Adaptive Semantics and its JuLiA platform for helping publishers discover the leaders in their social graph.

That acquisition now could bear fruit for AOL in influencing community engagement across a whole lot more web sites. AOL properties include community-specific sites such as the Patch network of localized news and events information, the DailyFinance business and investment news site, Autoblog, and many more.

ViewChange.Org Takes Video Into The Semantic Web In A Big Way

 

Here are two words that don’t necessarily spring first to mind when you think of implementing cutting-edge semantic web technology: Video and non-profit.

 Yet that’s exactly the direction taken by ViewChange.org , a project of Link Media’s LinkTV nationwide news, events and culture television channel and website. With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, ViewChange.org uses video to tell stories about progress in global development, with an eye to influencing action on the part of everyone from average citizens to the media to policymakers to NGO staffers. Non-profit organizations, film distributors and individual filmmakers contribute to its own videos their documentaries, news reports, and other films to the site, and as users click through video links in featured topics, from water and sanitation to governance and transparency to environment, the site uses semantic web technologies to dynamically generate links from the video being viewed to related video media, news stories, topics and actions – links that change based on where you are in the video.
