Microsoft Obtains a Patent for Augmented Reality Glasses

According to Charles Arthur of the Guardian, Microsoft has obtained a patent for augmented reality glasses, and the possibilities for semantic technology to be incorporated are endless. Arthur writes, “Microsoft has been given a patent on ‘augmented reality’ (AR) glasses that would enhance sports and other live events with streams of information beamed directly in front of the user – even including action replays and lyrics of songs. The move means that it could soon join Google in offering AR systems for widespread use, after the search giant unveiled its own Google Glass project earlier this year, intended to be used all the time as the user goes about their daily life.” continued…

Appinions, an opinion based marketing platform reports that the company has been awarded a patent “for their groundbreaking methodology for analyzing, extracting and summarizing opinions from digital text, such as articles, blog posts and social media messages. The US Patent Office awarded the patent to Appinions for the system and method for automatically summarizing fine-grained opinions in digital text. The patent covers the methodology Appinions uses to analyze text from more than 5 million online sources to extract opinions, identify the person or source of a particular opinion and determine the topic and sentiment of that opinion. The patent is effective for 20 years and precludes other companies from implementing the methodology and business processes developed by Appinions.” continued…

Manage Structured Data and Reap the Benefits

Near the end of August Kyield founder Mark Montgomery was granted an artificial intelligence patent by the USPTO, titled “Modular System for Optimizing Knowledge Yield In the Digital Workplace.” Kyield is developing a modular and interoperable semantic system that aims at delivering a higher level of yield for the knowledge worker. The new patent’s value, Montgomery says, can be found in filters for semantically managing data quantity and quality, and continually adjusting the consumption of data that can be automatically collected and audited on the web, intranets, or wireless devices. Those filters – think of them as data valves – apply to all three modules represented in the patent.

“There’s a correct assumption that the performance of your organization in the future, even now, is going to be dependent on how you manage your data,” Montgomery says. “Data represents everything in your organization – your intellectual assets, customers, employees, knowledge workers. Everything is digitized now. We’ve created this exponential growth of data and this system lets you mange that data for the entire organization in an adaptable manner.”

Patent, Patent, Digital Reasoning’s Got a Text Discovery Patent

Are you starting to hear more about patents that relate to the Semantic Web space? There was an interesting discussion by Erik Sherman here on Facebook’s patent for automatic search curation as feeding its semantic search ambitions, for instance.

Generally speaking, in fact, patents are big in the news, with the passage last week by the Senate of the Patent Reform Bill, which has among its goals getting patents issued sooner — but which also is spurring concern, especially in the tech industry, about its impact on patent infringement actions.

Against this backdrop, and perhaps flying a bit more under the radar, was a U.S. patent (No. 7,882,055) granted to Digital Reasoning for its distributed system of intelligent software agents for discovering the meaning in text. Company CEO Tim Estes calls what the vendor has applied to its Synthesis technology a “bottom-up” patent.

Specifically, it covers the mechanism of measurement and the applications of algorithms to develop machine-understandable structures from patterns of symbol usage, the company says, as well as the semantic alignment of those learned structures from unstructured data with pre-existing structured data — a necessary step in creating enterprise-class entity-oriented systems.

So, in plain(er) English, it’s about using algorithms to bootstrap the creation of semantic models from large-scale unstructured data with minimal a priori information – in other words, to let the data speak for itself. It aims at being a fast route to entity-oriented analytics for harvesting critical facts and relationships across a spread of information in documents.

More Patents Means More of A Need For Semantic Technology To Help Sift Through Them

Did you know that more U.S. patents were granted last year than for any previous year in the past forty-odd years, with the exception of 2006? So reports Dr. Mark J. Perry, professor of economics and finance in the School of Management at the Flint campus of the University of Michigan, here. That added a heap of patents – near to some 200,000 – to an already full plate that organizations often have to dig into, whether to identify patent infringers, to sell off some IP, to improve their existing portfolios with additional IP from other sources, or even to explore whether one of their own innovations is worth patenting.

Just as those patent grants surged in 2009, TextWise introduced as part of its semantic similarity matching API a service to help businesses expedite U.S. patent searching. That semantic search capability now is included as part of Innography’s IP business intelligence system for managing, protecting and getting ROI out of patents.

The semantic service Innography has partnered up with aims at helping the general population of business users – not just high-priced expert patent searchers – get “more like this” matches to generate good results without having to run iterative searches, Textwise president Connie Kenneally explains.

continued…
