Hard Core Tech in Los Angeles

In LA, that can be difficult, because the market is as diverse as any in the world… It’s a myth that LA doesn’t build hardcore technology, but to set the record straight, below are seven venture-backed LA companies of various sizes and stages with talented engineering teams building ‘deep tech’.” continued…

The Rise of ‘Big Content’

Virginia Backaitis of CMS Wire recently discussed the rise of Big Content and how semantic technologies are taking a role in mining value from said content. She writes, “The first time I heard the term Big Content, I thought ‘Oh brother.’ At the time, the people who used the term “Big Content” either talked about it in terms of content that went beyond their control (i.e. viral) and said that this was a highly desirable thing OR they argued that ‘content’ was growing at a rapid clip, and that Big Data technologies, such as Hadoop, were incapable of dealing with voluminous unstructured data — that you needed something called ‘Big Content’ to do that.” continued…

ADmantX Named “Cool Vendor” in E-Commerce by Gartner

NEW YORK, NEW YORK–(Marketwired – May 15, 2013) - ADmantX, the next-generation contextual analysis and semantic data provider, today announced that it has been included in Gartner “Cool Vendors for E-Commerce, 2013″ report, published on April 9, 2013, and authored by Chris Fletcher, Gene Alvarez, Praveen Sengar, Penny Gillespie, Regina Casonato, Andrew Frank.

The report reviews five vendors that provide innovative offerings in the digital marketing, social products, and digital and social e-commerce space. The main issue limiting the online advertising market is the disconnect between advertisement placement and the relevance of the copy. This is due to the reliance on keyword frequency without considering the meaning. Ads may appear on pages that have little significance to the assigned page or may produce counterproductive effects. Semantic technology automatically extracts the meaning in text to increase the relevance of ads, and maximize the website visitor’s receptiveness to advertising content. continued…

Chris Kanaracus of InfoWorld reports, “Salesforce.com continues to build out its Chatter social networking and collaboration software, with upcoming ‘social intelligence’ capabilities that will allow users to find information through new Topics and Expertise categories. Chatter is built into Salesforce.com’s underlying Force.com technology platform, allowing users of its CRM (customer relationship management) and other software to use social collaboration tools within a business context. Salesforce.com already gave Chatter users the ability to create profiles, and to follow users and system objects, such as a particular record. Chatter also has a recommendation engine, provides users with an ‘influence’ rating and has a Similar Files feature.” continued…

Analytics: The Next Big Thing in the Big Data Wave

Alex Pierre-Traves of Forbes reports, “The International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts the volume of data will grow by 40 percent over the next seven years. That’s a lot of data to manage, analyse and ultimately integrate into your business decisions. It’s unsurprising, then, to discover that analytics is the next big thing in marketing expertise. Today, data is used primarily to inform and analyse marketing campaigns, which is great for those of us in the agency business; however, what’s missing is meaningful analysis for our clients’ businesses to develop products and services that are relevant to their customers and, in turn, build brand loyalty. As the data we have at our disposal grows, new hires in marketing departments will increasingly need to have a technical, data or analytics background in order to deliver the strategic insights necessary for the business.” continued…

The Big BI Problems Created by Big Data

Doron Aspitz of Wired reports, “Developed before the rise of Big Data, Business Intelligence, or BI, was developed to change raw data into useful information. BI worked great for a time. Then the size and complexity of available data started to grow rapidly. More data led to an increase in reports, which forced people with domain expertise to manually analyze the reports. Today, BI is widely deployed. Unfortunately, it is actually used by only a small fraction of the people in a business with access to BI systems. Forrester Research estimates ‘the fraction of total employees that use BI applications between 5 and 9%.’ People don’t like to read stacks of reports. Big Data broke BI. Can we fix things by improving the network, processing, and storage systems to make the data machines run faster? Unfortunately, we can’t.” continued…

Holovisions Launches Semantic Technology for Morphing Prose Text

Image morphing is a special effect in which a first image is gradually changed into a second image. Image morphing is often used to morph one person’s face into a second person’s face. In the middle of the image morphing process, a new face is created that combines elements of both. Image morphing has grown in popularity and use since its introduction in the 1980s.

Now, in 2013, it is possible to morph together two bodies of prose text in a manner that is analogous to the way in which image morphing morphs together two images. continued…

Staying in the Loop with Topsy

A new article out of the company states that “Topsy, the real-time social analytics company, today introduced ‘Topsy Alerts’ and ‘Topsy Reports’, two powerful new alerting tools in Topsy Pro Analytics that instantly analyze billions of social conversations and deliver timely updates and early warning on relevant topics, breaking news and emerging trends via email or live dashboards. With ‘Topsy Alerts,’ users can receive immediate notification of a change in activity, sentiment or acceleration in any topic before it starts trending. For example, a news organization might identify breaking news by setting up alerts to track for accelerating conversations around key topics. A brand might get early warning on a major product issue by setting up an alert to detect a large drop in brand sentiment. Topsy automatically recommends appropriate alert thresholds to use based on historical data, such as the usual number of mentions for the terms you’re looking at.” continued…

Data Mining of Facebook & Twitter Shows Effect on Stock Prices

According to Tineka Smith of CBR Online, “New research links public sentiment on social media channels with the valuation of individual stocks. The study by Colt Technology services interviewed over 350 UK financial professionals. Over 60% said that public opinion on social media sites played a role in stock prices. While only 7% said that social media was a leading factor, 45% said it definitely had a role to play. Hedge funds and proprietary trading houses are now able to scan social media data and analyse messages into a range of public mood states. An algorithmic or trading strategy is then used to placed trade orders, giving them an edge over competitors who use traditional forms of data.” continued…

Exploring the Possibilities of Modern Linguistics at ABBYY

Ivan Kulikov of Gazea.ru recently wrote, “What is the difference between the search engine function and computer linguistics? Can natural language and machine language be merged? What counts as a language? Vladimir Selegey, head of the faculty of computer linguistics at the Russian State University for the Humanities and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and director of the ABBYY linguistics research company, answered these and other questions for Gazeta.ru.”

Selegey stated, “The linguistics technology behind modern search engines is pretty basic. Let me explain what I mean here. Search engines are currently dominated by statistical methodology: they deliver quick results but without any linguistic analysis; they compare humongous quantities of text data on the system and the history of queries that have been fed in. continued…

Introducing Winston: A News Reading App

Devindra Hardawar of Venture Beat reports, “Like one part Siri and one part morning news update, a new app called Winston could change the way you consume news online. Launching today on the iPhone for free, Winston reads aloud recent news and social media updates through a distinguished electronic English accent. The app summarizes news to highlight the juicy bits, and it also translates your Twitter and Facebook updates into easily absorbed nuggets (ignoring hashtags, abbreviations, and the usual social media mess).” continued…
