Google TV 3.0: Knowledge-Graph Smart Platform Debuts On New TV Devices

In the fall Google updated its Google TV platform to Version 3.0, touting features like its new Voice Search. This week, expect to hear about a slew of new products with the technology onboard launching at the CES show in Las Vegas.

Google recently reported on its Google TV blog that new partners added to its Google TV list include Asus, Hisense, and TCL. LG, Sony, Vizio and others will have refreshes of their set-top boxes, integrated TVs, and IPTV boxes with the latest Google TV platform on board.

Consumers that buy into these offerings also will be increasing their exposure to Google’s Knowledge Graph. The Google TV platform’s advanced voice control for changing channels or finding content of personal interest to watch (live or via Internet streaming), its new programming guide app, and its other smarts deliver results with the help of the vendor’s own Knowledge Graph, according to GIGAOM. With the Knowledge Graph, search queries run against a database of entities and relationships — it’s the search engine’s way of, as Google says, understanding “things, not strings.”

A.R.O Reveals ‘Ambient Companion’ Saga

Sarah Perez of Tech Crunch reports, “We’ve just been given a first look at Saga, a new mobile companion emerging from Seattle startup A.R.O. You can think of Saga as Siri’s little sister, perhaps. Instead of asking it questions or giving the app simple tasks (what’s the weather, add meeting calendar, e.g.), Saga is there, quietly tracking your behavior, your location and learning about your preferences, in order to make smarter recommendations about what you should do next. It’s the next evolution of those ‘ambient location’ apps which were all the rage at this year’s SXSW, perhaps.” continued…

LG, Microsoft Seek To Give Siri Some More Competition

Siri’s got more company: LG Electronics Quick Voice is scheduled to make its appearance on the LG Optimus Vu Android smart phones at the end of the month. Now there are three voice-enabled mobile personal assistants, including the Samsung S Voice on the Galaxy SIII Android smartphones.

Or maybe make that four? Microsoft and Audible have teamed up: Microsoft demonstrated some of the results on the Windows Phone 8 platform at its Windows Phone Developer Summit yesterday. It showcased the capability for developers to integrate speech response and recognition directly into software programs through APIs, so that users can have interactive voice conversations with their applications.

Taking Concept-Based Advertising To Mobile Platforms

If the future of web content is mobile, so too then goes the future of advertising. Mobile ad network Mobile Theory and ad technology company NetSeer want to be there for that future.

The two have teamed up with the goal of mobilizing NetSeer’s concept-based advertising, which uses algorithms to pinpoint relevant and related concepts based on the subject matter in a particular article, in the service of contextual ad delivery. On a mobile site for investing, NetSeer’s ConceptLinks might display related topics like “Exchange Traded Funds” and “Portfolio Management,” which are monetized links for the publisher, the company says. NetSeer says it already has several hundred publishers using its platform on the web.

Mobile Theory does the work of making an ad unit appear and function properly in a mobile environment. CEO Scott Swanson says that takes some work. On mobile platforms smaller, screen sizes, different screen ratios, ability for users to change orientations, and those users’ desire not to click on an ad and land somewhere else all must be considered. “We had to develop an ad unit that works completely different in mobile, to be faster, more simple, and more immediate than we do in online,” he says.

Smartphone Apps and Big Data

A new Financial Times article discusses the rise of the smartphone app and the data they collect: “Displaying up-to-the-minute information on everything from train times to cinema schedules, apps have in short order become a ubiquitous feature of smartphones. To most users, they are simply useful and entertaining tools. As well as providing users with information, however, these mobile software applications are also insatiable data-gatherers. Even the most mundane apps often collect a surprising amount from handsets just to do their jobs. This has put them at the forefront of a fast-evolving science based on the business use of consumer data. If there is commercial advantage to be gained, it seems, almost nothing is too insignificant to be collected and analysed.” continued…

Spotlight on Salesforce.com

According to a recent article, “Salesforce.com, the cloud enterprise service, has moved even farther from its original business of contact and sales force management. In January 2011, Salesforce.com acquired the Web conferencing service provider Dimdim. Dimdim provided a free Web conferencing service. Users could share desktops, show slides, collaborate, chat, talk and broadcast via webcam… The enterprise technology of Dimdim “snaps in” the Salesforce.com cloud. In addition, the enterprise version of Dimdim supports a number of third-party cloud-based applications, including Salesforce.com competitors’ SugarCRM and Zimbra, an open source e-mail server. Dimdim also offers an open source version of its technology.” continued…
