Session Spotlight: Beyond the Blob – Semantic Video’s Coming of Age

Michael Dunn, CTO of Hearst Media has been quoted saying, “Video, in its native form, is a blob of content… and it’s hard to extract data from it.” Thankfully, semantic technologies are starting to take video “beyond the blob,” and that is precisely what panelists at the upcoming Semantic Technology and Business Conference in San Francisco will discuss.

The panel discussion Beyond the Blob: Semantic Video’s Coming of Age is set to begin at 2:25 on Monday, June 3 at SemTechBiz and will feature a panel of semantic web professionals with a broad range of experience regarding semantic video. The panel will be moderated by Kristen Milhollin, Project Lead & Founder of GoodSpeaks.org, an organization aimed at creating a nonprofit media and data distribution network that increases public awareness and support of the work done by nonprofit and other charitable organizations. continued…

Introducing ViSTA-TV

They write, “ViSTA-TV (Video Stream Analytics for Viewers in the TV Industry) is a two-year collaborative research project about linked open data, statistics and recommendations for live TV, involving online TV viewing data, programme metadata and other external sources of data. We are working with three research institutions (University of Zurich, TU Dortmund University, and the VU University Amsterdam) and two companies (Zattoo and Rapid-I) to create: (1) Real-time TV recommendations for viewers. (2) Highly accurate low-latency audience research. (3) A high-quality, linked open dataset about TV. (4) A marketplace for audience metrics.” continued…

The article states, “Introduced progressively by European IPTV operator (Belgacom), starting June 19th, this enables the subscribers to benefit from a complete cross-platform content consumption experience. The already available platforms include an online service, mobile app and Connected TV app, all powered by the Jinni engine. The Jinni cross-platform experience is part of Belgacom’s hard-hitting strategy, aimed at maintaining competitive advantage by offering a superior service to its customers.” continued…

The article states, “TV Metadata is becoming increasingly rich and complex – powering increasingly advanced experiences. At a basic level, metadata tells us which programmes are available, and informs us about the content of those programmes. But metadata is getting richer and even bigger to support more visually engaging and functionally sophisticated user experiences.” continued…

A Semantic Future

Luca Scagliarini recently shared his insight into why he believes semantics will play an important role in the future of technology. He writes, “As a kid growing up in Milan I was obsessed with two things: sports and the future… While other kids probably dreamed about having superpowers, my dreams were about a future that was more grounded in possibility than fantasy, about inventions that, with the right combination of genius and determination, were possible. Having my own personal television, one small enough to take anywhere and where I could watch anything I wanted, anytime, was something I knew would come eventually. And while the mini TV was an encouraging sign, the technology was still many years away.” continued…

A new article looks at a developing trend of not just tagging television shows by episode but by the content of individual scenes. The article states, “Historically, TV Metadata has been used to supply Electronic Programme Guides (EPGs) and therefore has been adequate for description at a show level. But what about at the scene level? And why is scene level metadata — or Tagging TV — the new oil? It’s now all about applying metadata not just to a whole piece of content, but
individual chunks within it, such as a movie scene or song. Of course, this can be relevant both for production and search/discovery… but the real value lies in providing contextual data on the second screen — whether that be curated or automated, factual or commercial.” continued…

Semantic Technology’s Role in Leanback TV

A recent article discusses the growing trend of semantically powered “leanback” video players. The article begins, “When you are sat on the sofa at the end of the day relaxing and watching TV, maybe eating food and not in the mood to have to keep constantly making decisions about what to watch you might not think that you are in a situation where Linked Data and SPARQL queries could be useful. Yet the flexibility of the data that can be obtained from data sources supporting these technologies makes them ideal candidates to power a Leanback TV experience. With the right query it is possible to curate a collection of video podcasts that can be played one after each other to keep the TV viewer happy. They still have control, they can still go to any podcast in the collection, but they are not faced with a decision every ten minutes about what to watch, allowing them to relax and discover new content.” continued…

Trendrr Partners with Twitter and the Weather Channel

A recent article reports that Twitter has partnered with the Weather Channel “to push weather related tweets onto its enormously well-trafficked cable network and website, with the two groups splitting the ad revenue. For Twitter this is an opportunity to finally use its scale and speed in a partnership that can rake in good revenue. For New York based Trendrr, this was a chance to work behind the scenes on a massive deal. The company will be doing the semantic analysis to separate a tweet about a sudden rain shower from a tweet about your decision to take a quick shower after the gym.” continued…

Fostering TV Everywhere with Metadata

A recent article discusses the value of metadata in linking television content together, an important facet of a wider semantic relationship-building process. The article begins, “Today’s consumers want TV content not just in the web browser, but on smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles — you name it. However, for ‘TV Everywhere’ (TVE) to succeed, the industry cannot simply offer content on a multitude of devices — it must also ace the viewer’s search and discovery experience. Enter, metadata.” continued…
