Amazon Turns to Germany for Cloud & Machine Learning Engineers

David Meyer of GigaOM reports, “Amazon has announced the launch of a new development center for cloud technologies in Germany, with locations in both Berlin and Dresden. According to a statement from the company, the 70-plus engineers that Amazon will hire will work on technologies for supporting various hypervisors, management tools and operating systems. This is effectively a major expansion of the development team Amazon has already had in Germany since buying Berlin-based Peritor last year – a purchase that led to the release of the OpsWorks devops toolkit this February.” continued…

Convergence of Semantic Tech, Cloud, Hadoop, & NoSQL Spurring Big Data

Rutrell Yasin recently wrote that a convergence of growing technologies, including semantic web technologies, will spur exciting Big Data projects in 2013. Yasin writes, “The maturity and convergence of four technologies will help government decision-makers derive more value from their big data projects in 2013, predicts Chris Biow, public sector CTO at MarkLogic, a developer of databases for big data applications. ‘Cloud computing, Hadoop and NoSQL databases are the three game-changing technologies that are being applied to big data,’ Biow said. ‘I think this is the year that government agencies get their hands around what each of them can and cannot do.’ Semantic technology is the fourth discipline to add to the equation, which can be used to extract facts from structured and unstructured data as well as handle relationships between data in a more flexible way than traditional relational databases, Biow said during an interview with GCN.” continued…

Bringing Together the Cloud & Semantic Tech

Eric Little of Bio-ITWorld recently discussed how private cloud technologies can be used to improve semantic technologies. He writes, “While semantic technologies provide a sophisticated way of modeling complex relationships between data, the graphs that are created within semantic solutions can quickly grow to enormous sizes, given that they capture not only the elements contained within an enterprise’s raw data, but the added litany of related facts and relationships generated by automated reasoning, where 10-100 times as much new data can be generated from a single data source. As an example, imagine taking one’s raw assay data on a given compound, then linking it to all known data about related clinical studies and phenotypic effects, as well as underlying genomics data.” continued…

Capitalizing on Data without Doing the Dirty Work

Derrick Harris reports that as data continues to explode, business owners don’t need to rush back to school for a degree in Big Data analytics in order to capitalize on it. He writes, “Machine learning is high data science — a discipline focused on algorithms that automatically detect complex patterns hidden within datasets — and it’s fast becoming something that anyone leverages to sell more handbags, or solve a research problem, or build the next LinkedIn or Facebook… If you’re a small business or maybe even an individual, you need something easier. You need something in the cloud. And you need someone else to handle the hard parts.” continued…

Data Abstractions & the Cloud

Phil Windley, CTO of Kynetx, recently shared his insights regarding data abstractions and the cloud. Windley writes, “One of the primary services of a cloud OS (COS) will be data abstraction. Traditional operating systems provide data abstraction services by presenting programs and users with a file system view of the data stored in the sectors of the disk. We have the same kind of data abstraction opportunities in the cloud, although we aren’t talking about translating sectors into files, of course. And like the access control problem we discussed earlier, the problems that a cloud OS faces are made more complex by the distributed location and control of the data we want to access.” continued…

Siegel states, “The consumer’s electronic world as we know it today is shared between Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and a handful of other popular brands. Most offerings must ride on these platforms and play by their rules. Yet I believe our current interest in—and use of—this ecosystem will peak in 3-6 years, and what awaits each of these companies on the other side must be a completely different business.”

He continues, “We have spent the last twenty years making everything digital, and now that transformation is 99 percent complete. continued…

Taming Big Data with Semantic Technologies

Hamby writes, “The May 2001 Scientific American article ‘The Semantic Web’ by Tim Berners-Lee, Jim Hendler, and Ora Lassila described the Semantic Web as agents that query ontologies representing human knowledge to find information requested by a human. OWL ontology is based on Description Logics, which are both expressive and decidable, and provide a foundation for developing precise models about various domains of knowledge.” continued…

The Web is Anything But Dead

A recent article comments on a statement made by Chris Anderson in Wired Magazine last year that “the web is dead.” The article states, “Ten months later, events have shown that he couldn’t have been more wrong. That’s not because the Web is still alive and kicking. To be fair, Mr. Anderson never argued that it would collapse, just that it would become irrelevant. That hasn’t happened and it’s looking less and less likely that it will. In fact, thanks to the Web’s amazing ability to evolve, we’re soon going to see more innovation than we have in a long while. In a few short years, the web will be more mobile, interconnected, data rich and visually exciting than anything we’ve had before.” continued…

Call for a ‘Curated Cloud’

Steve Rosenbaum recently wrote an article about the messy state of the internet and the need for a “curated cloud.” Rosenbaum writes, “There’s good news in Apple’s iCloud announcement at WWDC, but it may not be from Apple. Let me explain. For the past five years we’ve been roaring headlong toward a digital disaster. A conflict that puts form factors, data creation, and consumer behavior in a trajectory that could only be catastrophic.” continued…
