Data is Shaping the Future of Product Development

Max Engel of HypeBot recently identified the smart use of data as one of three major trends currently shaping the future of product development. He writes, “The role that data plays goes beyond analytics. Open platforms and API’s allow for the creation of product mash-ups that have broken down barriers to content availability. One cannot underestimate the brilliance of platform-focused companies like SoundCloud and Spotify that allow innovation to occur rapidly and unfettered. Similarly, structured data is going to be increasingly impactful. Facebook’s Open Graph, for example, projects the foundation for the oft-mentioned semantic web.” continued…

Facebook Wants You to Catalog the Known World

Tom Simonite of the MIT Technology Review reports, “More than one billion people visit Facebook each month, mostly to see photos and messages posted by friends. Facebook hopes to encourage some of them to do a little work for it while they’re there. By asking people to contribute data—from business locations to book titles—and to check one another’s work, Facebook is building a rich stock of knowledge that could make its software smarter and boost the usefulness of its search engine. ‘We’re trying to map what the real world looks like onto Facebook so you can run really expressive and powerful queries,’ says Mitu Singh, product manager for Facebook’s entities team, a group charged with building a resource called the entity graph.” continued…

Taxing Data Mining?

Jacob Albert of Quartz reports, “First, they suggested taxing Google’s personalized ads to boost French advertisers. Then, they tried to tax Google News to finance the French press. Now, the French government is thinking about taxing the collection of personal data by Internet companies, according to a report put out Jan. 18. The main target would be American companies like Google, Facebook, or Amazon, whose data mining efforts generate enormous advertising profits but precious little tax revenue for countries like France.” continued…

Time Out Buys Semantic Analysis Company LikeCube

A new article reports, “Time Out, the listings and guidebook publisher, is upping its digital and social game: it has bought the UK-based semantic analysis company LikeCube to try to deliver more relevant events and offers to users. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. LikeCube creates recommendations based on semantic analysis. In its case, it uses your own reviews and reviews of people like you—its term for this is ‘taste neighbors’—to push recommendations to you based on your location. The latter, presumably, is to account for the fact that most people don’t leave reviews on sites like TimeOut.com.” continued…

Fostering TV Everywhere with Metadata

A recent article discusses the value of metadata in linking television content together, an important facet of a wider semantic relationship-building process. The article begins, “Today’s consumers want TV content not just in the web browser, but on smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles — you name it. However, for ‘TV Everywhere’ (TVE) to succeed, the industry cannot simply offer content on a multitude of devices — it must also ace the viewer’s search and discovery experience. Enter, metadata.” continued…
